25 Energy Saving Tips

Start saving money today with these quick, easy, cost-efficient tips!

  1. At night, turn the thermostat down to 65°F or lower. During the day, adjust to lowest comfortable setting. Or better yet, get a programmable thermostat!
  2. During the day, close drapes or pull shades at windows with no direct sunlight. At night, close all drapes for added insulation.
  3. Check caulking around window and doors and repair if necessary.
  4. Use storm windows and doors, and make sure they fit tightly.
  5. If you don't have storm windows, cover the outside glass with polyethylene sheets. They don't look elegant but they help to hold in heat.
  6. If you have an attached garage, keep the garage doors closed. Keeps heat loss through the house wall at a minimum.
  7. Seal off basement windows and attic door with tape.
  8. Don't waste heating oil by heating an unfinished basement. Insulate the piping, boiler, and hot water lines.
  9. If you have a kitchen vent, keep it closed when not in use.
  10. Keep doors to closets closed. No sense in heating a closet.
  11. A humidifier can make your home feel comfortable at 68°F. You might feel chilly at 72°F if the air were dry.
  12. Seal off your attic circulating fan with polyethylene and tape.
  13. Make sure you have at least 6" of good thermal insulation in your ceiling. If wall insulation wasn't installed when your home was built, get some expert advice on having it done.
  14. Insulate any heat ducts that run through your attic.
  15. Be sure to seal tightly all openings from indoor living areas into the attic.
  16. Close the damper when you're not using the fireplace.
  17. Check all vents for cracks and seal them.
  18. Remove air conditioning window units or cover them well.
  19. Put metal reflectors behind your radiators. They heat better and save fuel.
  20. If you have zone control, reduce the heat to unused rooms and seal off from the rest of the house.
  21. If you have baseboard outlets, make sure that rugs aren't blocking the air circulation.
  22. In warm air systems, replace air filters at least once a year.
  23. When building or remodeling, consider a vestibule to outside doorways to reduce flow of cold outside air into living areas.
  24. If dwelling is not occupied during the day, lower the thermostat.
  25. If your burner is more than 15 years old, consider replacing it with a new economical oil burner. A new burner can make the same amount of heat with less fuel.
